Why are we using Flight Time?
Accuracy in Flight Time Logging: Flight time typically reflects the actual time spent in the air, which can be more relevant for logging hours, particularly for training or regulatory purposes.
Cost Efficiency: If you’re renting an aircraft, you may be charged based on flight time rather than Hobbs time, which can include time when the engine is running on the ground. This could lead to lower rental costs.
Training Relevance: For student pilots, tracking flight time can provide a clearer understanding of their in-flight experience, focusing on the time they are actively flying rather than time spent on the ground.
Standardization: Many regulatory bodies and flight schools standardize flight time logging, making it easier for pilots to meet requirements for licenses and ratings.
Better Planning: Pilots can plan flights more accurately based on the actual time required to reach their destination, helping with fuel calculations and scheduling.
Encouragement of Proficiency: Focusing on flight time can encourage pilots to practice more efficiently and concentrate on flight skills rather than just accumulating Hobbs hours.
What is the difference between Tach and Hobbs times?
In order to keep track of various operation hours, maintenance milestones, and invoicing purposes, airplanes are equipped with independent clocks. Based on 2,400 RPM, the Tach or tachometer clock shows how many hours the engine is running and is used to track planned maintenance milestones (Piper and Cessna).
The Tach timer runs more slowly than actual clock time when the engine is running at power levels lower than 2,400 RPM. Hobs time is used by Aero Vector Flying Club for scheduling maintenance and billing. When the engine is running, the Hobs clock records the current time. Pilots enter flight hours in their log books using the Start-Up time.
